How do I use an IP to IR Relay with Ray?

Ray offers integration to IP-to-IR Relays as a professional-grade alternative to IR Repeaters to control out-of-sight equipment.

An IP to IR Relay is a small device that can be configured to connect to your local network and to receive instructions from Ray. That way, whenever Ray tries to control to a device that is out of sight, instead of sending an IR blast, Ray would instead connects to the IP to IR Relay and pass the instructions over the network. The IP to IR Relay would then pass the commands along over a wire to an IR emitter that blasts an IR signal aimed at the equipment Ray is trying to control.

Since the IP-to-IR Relay is connected to Ray over the network, it requires no component to be in line of sight of Ray (as the IR Repeater does). This means it has more flexibility in the placement of the equipment, and it also eliminates even more clutter in the living room by not requiring a visible IR Repeater.

In order to provide an IP to IR solutions to our users, Ray has partnered with Global Caché, a company that manufactures integration equipment for the control and automation industry, including IP to IR Relays. We have integrated Ray with the Global Caché iTach Flex line of IP to IR Relays, giving A/V installers, integrators and tech-savvy consumers this option to control their out-of-sight equipment by using a network-based solution. We recommend the ethernet connected IP to IR relay because it tends to be more reliable but, the Wi-Fi version can also be used:

How to setup an IP-to-IR Relay with Ray

Before you start, you will need one or more Global Caché Itach Flex unit and the necessary cabling.

NOTE 1: Ray does not work with the previous iTach line, only the newer iTach Flex line.

NOTE 2: We recommend that your Global Caché iTach Flex unit is installed and configured by a professional A/V installer or someone with A/V technical expertise.

We have a few recommendations to guarantee the best performance when using Ray with the Global Caché Itach Flex:

  • Whenever possible, use the iTach Flex IP/PoE (the ethernet version). We have found that it has better response times than the Wifi version and removes variables like Wifi signal quality from your setup.
  • When using the Wifi version, make sure Ray and the iTach Flex unit are connected wifi networks without a lot of additional traffic and on a less congested channel. You will find that the best performance can be achieved when Ray and the ITach Flex are on the same Wifi network with a minimal number of other devices.
  • Make sure the iTach Flex unit is upgraded to the latest firmware version, following the procedure described on the Global Caché website.

For information on setting up the Itach Flex unit, please see the Global Caché website. Once the units are setup on your network and tested using the Global Caché utilities, follow the steps below to finalize the setup with Ray.

NOTE: If you are setting up a Ray unit from scratch, you will need line of sight access to the equipment you are configuring during the setup process. After the setup process is finished and you have established that Ray can control your equipment with line of sight, you will be able to configure out of line of sight control using IP-to-IR relay in the settings section as described below.

Here's how to configure Ray to use an IP to IR relay:

1. On Ray's home screen, tap the Settings icon.


2. Tap on "Devices."


3. Tap on "Add Device."


4.  Tap on "IP to IR Relay."


5.  Ray will scan your Wi-Fi network for IP to IR Relays.


6.  Ray will show all of the IP to IR Relays found on your Wi-Fi network. Select the one you would like to setup.

If the relay you would like to setup is not listed, tap on "My IP to IR Relay is not listed." You will have the option to scan your network again or enter your IP to IR Relay's IP address manually.

7.  Select the devices you control with your IP to IR Relay. To select a device, tap on the "+" button next to the device name.

You will notice that the device will have a green checkmark replacing the "+" button to indicate that it has been selected. Once you have selected the device(s), tap "Continue" button to proceed.

8.  Your IP to IR Relay has been successfully added. Tap "All Done" to finish.


Your IP to IR Relay will now show in your Devices list in Settings. Tapping on "IP to IR Relay" in Settings>Devices will bring you to the device's detail screen where you can adjust the IP to IR Relay's port selection and the list of devices that are controlled with the relay. These can also be adjusted in each individual device's detail screen by tapping on "Advanced Settings" and then tapping on "Device Control."
